TRANSITIONS AND PUNCTUATION
OPTION 1
A leader can be defined as many different things. According to UT, "Leadership" here is officially defined as "The will to excel with integrity and the spirit that nothing is impossible.[1] A leader is not always the person who is out in front of the crowd or giving demands. A person can be a
silent leader who is an example to others. They lead by their actions, what they say, and how they carry themselves. I try to be the person who leads by example. It is important to do the things you preach to other people and hold yourself accountable. Growing up, I had great examples of leaders who made a difference in so many people’s lives. I am very excited to share my vision for my goals and to make a plan to help foster my dreams into reality!
If someone were to ask me what I want to be when I “grow up” I would probably give a couple different possibilities as to what I might become. However, if someone were to ask me what my passion is then a specific answer automatically comes to mind. At the end of P3 I mentioned how giving back brings such a warm feeling to my life. “Your leadership vision must fit with your personal vision; it emerges from it and helps make your personal vision happen.”[2] I have always seen the need for positive role models in black and brown communities, specifically lower income families. Growing up I lived in predominately white neighborhoods, went to private school, and most of my friends were white. However, on Sunday’s my family and I would attend church on the other side of town. This was a predominately black church which was located in a low income neighborhood. For the longest time I never understood why my parents would drive all the way across town just to go to church. As I got older, I realized that my parents would go to the other side of town in order to help the youth and be a positive influence in their lives. I am very thankful that my parents did this, because it provided a great example for my brother and I. It also has given me a desire to reach out and continue the legacy that my parents have already started.
I have been very blessed with two amazing parents, but many of my close relatives have struggled with addictions and their lives have not been easy. I have also seen that children who live in this environment struggle coping with the different situations that might occur. Being a positive role model can not only make a difference in their immediate lives, but also in their future lives. I love the idea of doing a big/little system. Pairing one child with a buddy and having them do different activities together. By doing this we can be a constant force in their lives and be the person they come to when they need help. Consistency can go a long way with building trust when forming a relationship.
I understand that there are many different steps in order to make an idea like this happen. It is always good to have your big idea, but it is also important to have short term goals. I understand that things like this take time to happen, but I hope that this vision will be completed within the next 10 years. One short term goal that can be completed before that however is putting this plan into motion at my church back home. Incorporating what I learned from doing community service, specifically the “Pinkalicious” workshop I organized back in high school his can be a great program. Like I mentioned in P3, “Pinkalicious” is a self-esteem workshop for young girls designed to teach them how beautiful they are inside and out. Although that project was designed specifically for young girls, I received great insight on what works and what doesn’t for children. There are so many children that need people to help guide them in the right direction. Starting small is never a bad thing and is a great way to test the waters. Dealing with children is a very important job that is not for everyone. Children are special and fight their own battles daily. The saying, “you never know what someone is going through” is something I try to live by. We never know what a person is going through when we meet them and it is very important to greet everyone with kindness. Kids are very impressionable and how we treat them could play a huge role in their character development.
Celebrating small successes can allow you to feel accomplished, yet still be motivated to keep pushing for your dream. It is also important to understand that it will be very hard to achieve your
dream by yourself. Working with a team will not only speed up the process, but can alleviate so much stress. Once a person realizes that it is bigger than themselves, that is when the magic happens. There are a countless number of lessons that I have learned that have taught me that sometimes you need people to lean on.
College is the best place to learn that message and understand that sometimes you need help! Using your resources to help you and make connections is a valuable lesson I have learned. As my freshman year comes to an end, I am so thankful for all of the lessons I have learned. It seems like yesterday when I first moved into my dorm to begin my journey. I now have a new perspective on so many different things and there is nothing that I would change about this school year. When I first learned that I was accepted into Plan II, I felt unworthy. The program seemed so intimidating and the courses seemed so rigorous. Over the summer when we were deciding our World Lit classes I had no idea that the class I picked would have such a huge impact on.
When I decided to pick this class, I had no idea it would make such a huge impact on my life. After writing P3 I realized that this class has done so much in shaping my future. “I had to learn to absorb and synthesize the contents of any number of books in a week's time.”[3] All of the different readings we have done over the course of this year have forced me to step outside of myself and see things from a different perspective. Remembering this important message and other things I have learned in this class will help me as I go throughout the rest of my college career as well as with my future aspirations. Another element that has made a lasting impact on my year has been leading the class discussions. Getting the opportunity to put a presentation together and stand up in front of the class is a great way to prepare for when you have to make a marketing pitch for your future non-profit or wherever your life may take you! Overall, this class has done a great job preparing us for our future and really opening our eyes to the truth going on in the world.
My college experience so far has been very rewarding. Although everything has not always been perfect, it has been an all-around great experience. For the rest of my time at UT, I plan to get more involved. This school year I was involved with a couple of student organizations, but I feel like I did not do enough. In high school, I was always so busy with school, sports, and community service. Since I was always so busy, I never had much free time and because I have so much free time now, I feel like I am not doing enough. Getting involved is a great way to leave your mark on campus and make a difference in the lives of those you encounter. If “what starts here changes the world, then we should strive to be better and do better every day. As far as classes, I plan to take classes that force me to think outside the box, expand my creativity, and further develop who I am as a person. UT has so many classes that are focused on a variety of different topics and taking a diverse set of classes can only help me and benefit my vision. Plan II is such a great program that promotes our creativity and finding our own path. Through the required courses offered by Plan II, we are constantly being forced to look at ourselves and think about the person we are. By taking a lot of classes on various topics it will help me when it comes time to write my thesis senior year. My thesis will be about something I am passionate about and even though I have no idea on what that will exactly be, I can almost guarantee it will help me accomplish my leadership vision for the future! College is a beautiful time to explore, find who we are, and create a plan for our future!
